Commonly asked questions - buyers guide
Buying the best two-way radio for your school can be a minefield. There are so many options available and it can be a little overwhelming. I'm going to try and address the most common questions and walk you through the radio selection process.
First things first, you've recognised the need for two-way radios (or walkie talkies) to be procured for your school, that's great. Where do we start, school size. How big is your school, I mean in grounds size, do you have multiple buildings, are they multi-story buildings? We ask this initial question to ascertain how much power will be needed from a walkie talkie to give you full site coverage. For example a small primary school with a single building on one floor will get away with a very low powered licence free radio, whilst a multi site campus with numerous multi-story buildings would need high powered radios and even a repeater.
The next question we ask is how many radios are you looking to purchase and is this a new system or are you wanting to add units to an existing setup of radios. Now you may think we ask for the number of radios so that we can weigh up the size of the deal money wise ££££. This is not true, the number of radios influences the type or device we recommend. This is because when you have over 30 or 40 radios sometimes its a good idea to assign users to different groups to keep the main channel traffic down. Can you imaging 50 people all trying to use one channel for all their different calls? Mayhem!
From here on we have a good idea of which type of radio will suit your school site best. The four main types are licence free, analogue, digital and PoC (push to talk over cellular). Each type of radio has its own sets of strengths and advantages, our aim is to match not just your technical requirements but also your financial ones too. We will work with you to get the right product at the right price. With quantity discounts and promotions always running we will do our best to get you the best radios for your budget.
